Deployed Marine battalion commander relieved of command

The commander of a deployed Marine battalion has been relieved of his command due to a loss of confidence.

Lt. Col. Marcus J. Mainz, the commander of 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment was relieved on Saturday, according to a press release.

He was relieved “due to a loss of trust and confidence in his ability to continue to lead the battalion.”

He was replaced by Lt. Col. Christopher Bopp, the former commander of 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division.

Mainz is being reassigned to the II Marine Expeditionary Force.

The 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment is currently deployed overseas with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), which just took part in the Eager Lion exercise in Jordan.
