A US Marine Reservist and FDNY firefighter was recently killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
The FDNY is mourning the loss of Christopher Slutman, a married father of three and fifteen-year veteran of the department who was killed while performing his military duties near Bagram Air Base.
According to the New York Post, Slutman was known for his heroic nature, and had been awarded the Fire Chiefs Association Memorial Medal in 2014 for rescuing an unconscious woman from a burning apartment.
“He was really a great guy,” one firefighter said of Slutman. “He loved being a fireman, and he was a real family man.”
Slutman was one of the three US personnel killed near Bagram Air Base during a convoy ambush, bringing the total 2019 American death count in Afghanistan to seven.
