Clinton and Kaine violate OPSEC giving dates and location for Marine deployment

Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Tim Kaine, has a son in the Marines. And he’s getting ready to deploy — today apparently.

Clinton spoke at a VFW Convention saying, “My running mate in this election is a wonderful man from Virginia named Tim Kaine. He’s a US Senator, he was governor of Virginia, mayor of Richmond, Virginia… His son is a Marine. His son is actually deploying today, to help defend our NATO allies in Europe.” See 7:20 in YouTube below for the sequence.

So now the enemies of America have the date and location of these troops, putting a target on them overseas.

A few days earlier, one of Kaine’s aides told reporters Saturday that Lt Kaine was deploying to Europe on Monday, according to CNN.  Kaine followed up saying his son was helping “to uphold America’s commitment to our NATO ally,” according to the news source.

It seems Kaine needs to attend OPSEC classes as well and national news organizations have posted the information since he relayed it.

Total fear mongering.I do find it interesting that when the group one agrees with does this type of thing, it’s ok but when the group one disagrees with does it, it’s a violation of every law on the books & going to get everyone killed. Insanity. Many political figures announced their sons, daughters, grandchildren, etc are being deployed.     • I’m a tad late but since this is not a US/DOD/SecNav/USMC endorsed site why do you identify it as being USMC Life? Why not Key Wive’s Life or Military Spouses Life, or Writer Using USMC to Help Sell Books Life? Or are you just riding the coattails of our proud Corps to promote your political beliefs? Reason I ask is I don’t think the services openly endorse candidates and am not trying to ignite any legal “barracks lawyers” out there that might quote orders and so forth. Just saying that in my 20 yrs of Enlisted and Commissioned service the endorsement of almost anything is both unlawful and worse totally unsat. By promoting your political views under the guise of USMC Life you are doing disservice to same.Too many have given their life for the USMC to allow someone to hijack it to promote their agenda. I find it very offensive (that’s a PC way of saying it pisses me the hell off) when folks adorn themselves with everything imaginable to remind us they might have been somehow affiliated with the Marines while they take a political stance. In other words endorse all you want to but don’t USE the USMC name to add credibility or solicit votes. If you are a civilian then why do you resort to using the USMC name to promote only one side of any argument? It sets a bad example for junior Marines by showing them it is ok to use USMC for their own personal or political gain. It also degrades the image of the USMC by giving a false impression of any one-sided endorsement

    (b) For purposes of this section, the provision of documents and materials to the Congress shall not constitute an offense under subsection (a).

      I read this entire post. I have found NO indication that the destination of this soldier was named. EUROPE is big place and,no doubt, has troop landings and departures quite often.

      For those of you who apparently do not read, or watch anything other than FOX, Hillary has been investigated over and over (all promoted by Republicans) and has been CLEARED of any “criminal activity.” AND remember, 7 MILLION emails were erased by George Bush – and he was not charged with anything criminal. Colin Powell and Condy Rice also used private email accounts, no charges! so apparenty it was acceptable for Republicans

This publication and several other Military publications along with the Marine Corps itself has violated OPSEC over a dozen times in the last two years. One publication had it down to the weekends for multiple returns of Marines stationed on the east coast. One publication even said which ports they would stop to visit. Police your own yard before talking crap about someome else.

Some of you need to brush up on opsec . I kept where my husband was under lock and key and NEVER EVER said when he was leaving or returning or even never did count downs on Facebook . We even had codes he would send in emails even if it was a peace time deployment on his return dates if he couldn’t get me on the phone . What Hillary did was stupid on her part and shouldn’t have e ever said it .

    • I served 24 years on active duty. 9 of those years I served in various capacities as an OPSEC officer as a collateral duty.
      A) Not a national security deployment so DoD policy doesn’t apply
      B) General troop movements to include USMC deployments are not OPSEC violations and routinely released in media and print
      C) You should probably not use “my husband was in for 14…blah blah” and Google searches as your basis of expertise.

  24. Ma’am, kindly read the OPSEC regs, particularly Sec. 2.1. the regs apply to the DOD. It does not cover Clinton or Kaine. You cannot violate regulations to which you are not subject.
    Please try to gain an understanding of DOD regulations, and to whom they apply, before you comment on them.

  27. Deployments are a normal walk of life for our members of the armed services. Everyone in the world knows that we support NATO in Europe, have forces in Qatar etc. Troops are regularly deployed to replace those returning to their regular assignment. Now if one said the time and place and method of travel THAT would be something but the fact that he is going to Europe on Monday is NOTHING, Hell if they want they can get the airline manifests showing who is going where when easy enough, and most of our troop movement is by commercial aircraft. I am a father of a USAF Captain currently serving in Qatar

    She didn’t name a unit, a time, a location, a length of deployment, or what the deployment was for. That isn’t violating OPSEC.

    The local media had far more information published about the deployment and discussed potential OPSEC info over the weekend and last week.

  49. A lot of you folks need to go back and relook your OPSEC DATA. If you give personnel names, unit names and dates of deployment into a combat zone it is an OPSEC VIOLATION. When you combine all of the data together it becomes a violation.

    • NATO is not a combat zone. Maybe you should recheck your facts. When the data is published and common knowledge it is nothing at all to report it.

Thing is anyone that been in the military or have family in the military know that the LOCAL NEWS stations, NATIONAL news stations, newspapers, and MILITARY, etc plan HUGE events for deployment dates and return dates. So tell me again how this is a a breach in security to say that someone is leaving or is on deployment? My son left Virginia Beach in June – HUGE send off on the Navy Base port with TV, newspapers, lots of reporters and cameras there that the Navy approved to be there. And his ship has their own PUBLIC page to keep everyone up to speed as to their day to day events. Of course they don’t always give specific locations or tactic plans, but it’s not hard to find out where about they may be on any given day. Again IF YOU ARE MILITARY OR MILITARY FAMILY YOU KNOW HOW IT REALLY WORKS!!!! It’s not all dots and dashes in secret code!

Consider all the dependent’s briefings, the number of rental contracts/leases that need to be broken on the economy, equipment lay-outs, personnel records checks, dental and medical checks, Marines taken from battalion (Bn) “X” who isn’t deploying to fill in the blanks of Bn “Y”, qualification with all weapons [individual & crew served and vehicle mounted] the list goes on.
    This is the least egregious OPSEC violation in the history of finding out what the enemy is doing. Let’s nail her ever-expanding hide to the barn door over the real OPSEC violations, you know, our enemy’s reading her e-mail before she does..

  58. I’m sure this was not a Vietnam vet or a vet of any other era as anyone in the military would know that Opsec is not what it was in previous conflicts. The enemy did not live among us nor was there the ability to locate people through various means on the internet. If my child were in military service I would be very happy if he was deploying with Cains’s son if some egotistical politician would keep their fucking mouth about where or when he was going anywhere. This one piece of information may be harmless but coupled with other data could prove harmful.

    So, *IF* “Europe” is a specific enough location to “[enable adversaries to] plan, prepare, and conduct a military or other operation against the United States” (and I’d argue that it is not: There are US military bases in well-known locations all over Europe. No mention is even made of which European country/NATO ally, let alone a specific base or installation), then it would be Kaine’s son who violated OPSEC, by disclosing critical details of his deployment to non-DoD personnel, to whom OPSEC does not apply, thereby compromising his own deployment.

    If Clinton mentioning that Kaine’s son is deploying to Europe is a violation of OPSEC, then so is the mention any parent ever made of their child being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. And those *are* more specific locations than “Europe”, thereby giving our enemies more useful information about where we are sending troops.

    In a nutshell, considering “europe” to be a mission-critical detail is akin to classifying the location of the entire United States. Pointless, and impossible anyway. Just like our enemies already know where the US is located on the globe, they also already know that we have troops in Europe. The fact that one more kid is being deployed there tomorrow does NOT give them any strategic advantages that they don’t have without that information.

They seem to be indicating that the deployment is occurring “today” in defense of NATO allies which reside in Europe, not that the troops are necessarily being deployed to Europe.   67. Step two of OPSEC procedures (analyze critical nsture if operstion) excludes the application of these specific security measures. Troop deployment to existing and secure bases in allied controlled nations is not a high risk operation.

Very little information was given about Kaine’s son and that of a very general nature (saying someone is a Marine and is deploying to Europe is hardly a violation of OPSEC) — and the context was hardly of a high risk nature. Most of the detailed information about Kaine’s son’s deployment came courtesy of the Marine Times (http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/story/military/2016/07/26/vp-picks-trump-clinton-both-have-sons-marine-corps/87545362/ ), so if you want to accuse anyone of violating OPSEC, you need to look there. This article is simply yet another entry in the campaign of disinformation provided to create false perceptions of Clinton.

I’m not military nor know OPSEC, but it seems to me that if someone breaks OPSEC by talking about deployment dates and such, would it not present the same security risk to then tell where the same soldier named in the article is stationed? I would think that it would be more difficult to track someone down in Europe than it would be to figure out where the live at or near a base they are stationed at.

    Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in any way supportive of Hillary.

    This election really isn’t about either candidate at this time. It’s about the appointment of at least 1 seat in the Supreme Court. Yes, the candidate may influence the direction of the US for possibly the next 8 years if they can pull 2 terms, but naming someone to fill up the Supreme Court is by far a greater and longer lasting influence.
