
Camp Pendleton’s Armed Services YMCA is once again putting on its Ball Gown Giveaway event Sept. 29 on base.
spouses can sign up to come to the one-day giveaway and choose a dress, shoes and accessories to wear to the upcoming Corps and balls.
The dresses are donated by community members and area businesses.
The effort began 15 years ago and was known as Operation Ballgown Giveaway. It started as a way for community members to say thank you to young spouses who might not otherwise have been able to afford a gown.
The event was spearheaded by Linda Eastwood, a former member of the board at the nonprofit Camp Pendleton Armed Services YMCA. Since then, the event has drawn hundreds of and wives. Last year, more than 1,500 dresses were given away to Camp Pendleton wives.
The event also provides suits, shoes and accessories for male spouses.
dependents can sign up for 30-minute “shopping” slots from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to select and try on gowns at Building 1795 Unit Event Center in the San Luis Rey Housing Area. dependents or spouses in ranks E4 and below can come from 10 to 11 a.m. IDs will be checked.
After the event, the remaining gowns and accessories will be shared with Twentynine Palms, Miramar, MCRD San Diego and Yuma for their events.
