Jobs are hard to come by these days and with the imminent draw down of the Marine Corps by 20,000 Marines in the next five years, veterans are in need of jobs more than ever. I can relate as a military spouse. I had to give up my career to follow my Marine from duty station to duty station, all in a downward economy with little opportunities for work.
The good news is that programs like Joining Forces and corporations are specifically reaching out to connect with spouses and veterans for job or mentoring opportunities. I’m sure you will find some resources to help you along your journey whether you need to continue your education, find a mentor, or land a job.
If you’re looking for work, check out MilitaryVetJobs. They’re a veteran owned organization and know the value military skills, expertise, and education bring to the civilian workforce. “They offer a fantastic site with built in community which offers support and connections to employers looking to hire qualified veteran candidates and military spouses. Any branch of the military is welcome to join and is of course free for veterans and military spouses who have sacrificed so much for our country.
Qualified candidates can sign up using their Facebook logins. The entire sign up process takes about five minutes and is very user friendly. When a candidate signs up, they can start searching for jobs by radius of a city, by state, by job field or by a specific company name. In turn, companies can search for candidates by job qualifications or location if the candidate leaves their resume listed as “public.” There are more options by leaving it public and we recommend doing that.
MilitaryVetJobs.com has a very strong presence on Twitter and Facebook and we are expanding our reach into LinkedIn and also Google+. We post jobs daily across our social media boards and we also talk about new partnerships or information for veterans that we feel will best benefit them.

I’d like to add here that MyCAA funding is a great resource for military spouses who are looking to supplement their careers with additional training (preferrably vocational). So if you want to train to become a medical billing and coding specialist, computer technician, pharmacy technician or even an administrative or medical assistant, it’s a great way to train online and get certified, and have that pop on your resume for extra points with an interviewer. MyCAA funding amounts to about $4000 over 3 years, and there are many schools that easily integrate MyCAA funding into their training, like CareerStep MyCAA funding programs available online.
