The “active shooter” situation at the Marine Corps Air Station at Twentynine Palms, California, has turned out to be a case of a Marine shooting himself.

The shooter, a Marine who sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was transported to a Palm Springs hospital after the incident took place at around 08:30 local time.

According to the Desert Sun, the shelter-in-place order has been lifted, and the gates to the base have been reopened.

It is unknown if the self-wounding was intentional or accidental.

The incident began after several individuals reported hearing gunshots, prompting a Military Police response.

The condition of the Marine is unknown.
