BURGAW, NC — Two motorcyclists killed Sunday in Pender County were identified Tuesday as active-duty Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune, according to the NC State Highway Patrol.
Brent Phelps, 23, and Sergeant Collin Cernik, 23, died as a result of the 3:40 p.m. head-on collision on Old Maple Hill Road in Pender County.
Troopers said both men were on motorcycles. One of the men was speeding westbound near Shaw Road when he crossed the center lane and struck an eastbound motorcycle driven by the other man.
It was not immediately clear if the two Marines knew one another, or who was driving which motorcycle.
According to the SHP, both men were stationed at Camp Lejeune, but were in different units.
