Gene Hammond Marine veteran

A Marine veteran was found shot to death in his car in Denver on Valentine’s Day. It’s been more than 2 months since the murder and the questions still remain.

The 63-year-old Marine infantry officer, Richard “Gene” Hammond, served 24 years in Corps. The father of five children, two of his family members following in his footsteps. One daughter is an active-duty Marine, the other is married to an active-duty Marine. They want answers.

“We keep thinking Dad is going to call the next day,” Jessica Moon said. “We were definitely robbed of a wonderful father.”

Hammond lived in the Denver area and served as the transportation director for the Falcon 49 School District in the Colorado Springs area. He was found shot in the head in his car — without his wallet, cellphone or wedding ring — just half a mile from home in an alley near York Street and Bruce Randolph Avenue.

“I don’t know why I feel like someone was looking for him. Don’t know who or why,” Moon said.

Hammond commuted to Fountain daily, and he typically left his home between 3:30 and 4 a.m. for work. He was killed approximately 12 hours later, around 3:30 or 4 p.m. on Valentine’s Day.

The Marine veteran robbed of his life won’t have the opportunity to walk his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day. He will also miss meeting a grandchild currently on the way.

“He was just a thoughtful man,” Erin Hammond said. “He put his heart and soul into everything he did.”

Police authorities are investigating leads in Hammond’s murder. They currently have no suspects.

Crime Stoppers is currently offering a reward of $12,000.

The family is holding a GoFundMe fundraiser — all funds raised will go to the Metro Denver Crimestoppers.  Any unused funds will be donated to Crimestoppers to help other families affected by violence.
